Overview

I'm going to buy a new external storage device.

Currently, I'm using a Buffalo external HDD. I purchased it in 2018 and have been using it for 5 years, but since its capacity is almost full and its life is approaching its end, I've decided to retire it.

  • HD-PNFU3-E Series
    • USB3.1(Gen1)
    • 1TB
    • USB Type-A
    • Approximately 8,000 JPY

Oh, I should write a review. It's been working without any issues for 5 years, so I trust this device. That's it. I'm going to choose the next one from Buffalo as well.

Requirements

  • Larger capacity than the current one (2TB or more)
  • Preferably SSD
  • Preferably USB Type-C connection
  • Price of 8,000 JPY or less per 1TB

External SSD

There's a fascinating lineup of stick-type devices. I'm surprised by the USB memory-like size.

  • SSD-SCTU3A Series
    • USB3.2(Gen2): A bit faster than the current one.
    • Maximum 2TB: Meets the requirement.
    • Type-A&C: Seems to be compatible with Type-C.
    • 34,540 JPY for the 2TB model: What?
  • SSD-PUTU3C Series
    • USB3.2(Gen1)
    • Maximum 1TB: Hmm.
    • Type-A: Hmm.
    • 11,110 JPY for the 1TB model: More expensive than the requirement, but the stick-type design is attractive. However...

At this point, I'll give up on the "preferably SSD" requirement. The price was the issue.

All of them are stationary types, just like the current one.

  • HD-PGAC-A Series
    • USB3.2(Gen1)
    • Maximum 2TB: Meets the requirement.
    • Type-C&Type-A cables included: Well, I guess it meets the requirement.
    • 15,950 JPY for the 2TB model: Overall, it meets all the requirements.
  • HD-PGF-A Series

I'll go with the last series. Instant decision. Yes, I was blown away by the 5TB capacity. There's also a sense of reassurance in choosing the successor to the model I'm currently using. In reality, if you search online shops, you can buy it for around 16,000 JPY... That's not 8,000 JPY per 1TB, but rather 3,200 JPY per 1TB.

The Winner

So, we have our winner.

It's slightly larger in size than the previous 1TB model. It's also thicker.

Following the official instructions, I'll format it before using it.
