Overview

This wild camping trip lasted for several days. For my previous camping experience (in summer), check here↓

Temperature During Camping

This was my first winter camping. I was unsure about how well my gear would hold up against the temperatures. So, I paid close attention to the temperature throughout. Here's a record of that.

The temperature during this trip was around 0 to 5 degrees Celsius.

Inside the shelter, with the flysheet and emergency sheet set up, the temperature seemed to rise by about 0 to 5 degrees. So, inside it was about 5 to 10 degrees.

The temperature inside the down sleeping bag appeared to be about 20 degrees higher than the outside. During this trip, the inside of the sleeping bag consistently stayed above 20 degrees.

While it was warm enough to sleep, the sleeping bag itself gets cold. If you lie in a bad position, it can get chilly. Also, if there's a gap around the neck, cold air can flow in. So, tightening the sleeping bag around the neck and covering my face with a towel to minimize skin exposure to the cold air seems to be a winter camping trick.

There were other nuances as well. Like spreading a wide silver sheet to prevent cold air from the ground (which I couldn't do perfectly due to limited luggage space on my bike), wrapping the sleeping bag with various things for insulation, and ensuring that the luggage doesn't get wet during the trip.

Being conscious of the temperature all the time, I discovered that “up to 0 degrees, wearing snow boots, WORKMAN's Aegis pants, layering four tops, wearing a neck warmer, and donning WORKMAN's Aegis gloves is enough to stay active.”

At 0 degrees, condensation inside the flysheet freezes.

Through this camping experience, I feel my tolerance for cold has increased. Temperatures around 4, 5, 6 degrees now feel easy (as I know the right clothing to combat them).

Temperature Story's Punchline

When I got home, the room temperature was 20 degrees (the same as inside my down sleeping bag during camping),

and inside my futon, it was over 30 degrees.

Home is truly a blessing. The luxury of touching hot water, the warmth, the sense of security.
