Overview
This time, I'll logically explain why my desk is simply the best. Oh dear, Yadami-kun is rambling about something again.
It's Minimalist
Midori-san's desk is a modest one I bought a few years ago for about 3,000 yen. As you can see, the wire nets used on the sides are from a 100-yen shop. Minimalism is great. You can build it right away when inspiration strikes, and rebuild it easily when you change your mind.
It's Pragmatic
Pragmatism means having what you need and not having what you don’t. The things I always need are kept on the desk, and the things I need occasionally are hung on the wire nets. Basically, items are arranged according to the simple rule of "the more often you need something, the closer it should be to you." Or put simply: "Keep frequently used items within arm's reach."
For example, I don’t keep my headphones or sketchbook on the desk, since I don’t need them constantly, but I do hang them nearby since I use them often. As for external storage devices, I can’t exactly hang those (I guess it's better to keep them horizontal, right?), so I attach them underneath the desk.
I Don't Overcommit to Details
Basically, it’s okay for the parts you can’t see to be messy. Cables are routed behind the desk, but that area can be handled casually. Keeping casual where it's okay to be casual makes it easy to rebuild things when your preferences change.
I even hang trash bags without worrying about appearances—because they're necessary. Fashion requires sacrifice, but pragmatism doesn't.
Hanging Things
Why does Midori-san like to hang things?
Because it makes cleaning easier. No matter how nice a desk looks, dust will accumulate. Especially if you leave power strips on the floor, that area becomes something you’re likely to avoid cleaning. To keep a desk clean, you need an environment that makes cleaning easy. This is what we call sustainability.
Other Small Advantages
- Since I'm left-handed, I’ve set things up so that the light comes from the right.
- The carpet is a hand-me-down from my beloved roommate.
- By placing the power strip under the desk, there’s only a single cable extending from the desk.
-
Tissue boxes and power strips under the desk are attached with Velcro, not magnets or adhesive tape.
-
This makes them easy to remove and reposition.
-
I keep my bag attached to the desk, using it as an extra storage unit.
-
What this means is, I don't have to keep transferring items between my bag and desk whenever I leave the house.
- For me, things like wet wipes and my pencil case fit this category.
- The best part is, I don't forget to bring those items with me anymore.
The End
My desk is the best.
