Ah, it's a new series, I thought as I read it. Here are my summary and thoughts.
Summary
- "The Ukiyo-e of Da Vinci" and other romantic treasures were stolen by the thief Flaneur. After his death, his children, who discovered that their father was a thief, had their lives thrown into chaos.
- The eldest daughter, regressing to a child-like state; the eldest son, harboring resentment towards his father and determined to return the stolen treasures; and the second son, who sympathized with his father.
- The eldest son, Arukino Michitari, with the help of Keibatsu Tsuyako, his father's right-hand woman, diligently works on returning the treasures.
- The current target is to return a treasure known as the "Tamatebako" to the National Otokojima Submarine University in the Seto Inland Sea, which used to be a military facility involved in producing carcinogens. The "Tamatebako" is the box containing them, a negative legacy of the university, which now conducts cancer research normally.
- Michitari-kun, along with the eccentric detective Ruisawa Toraharuka-chan and Commissioner Tojinbo, heads to the university under the guise of conducting an interview, hoping to complete the return in the process.
- There, Michitari-kun's younger brother, Gunka-kun, interferes, and the return is thwarted. Gunka-kun, calling himself the Phantom Death March, declares his intention to hinder Michitari-kun amid the chaos of a staged murder scene.
Thoughts
- Hmm, I can't help but be reminded of the "Nonsense Series," and I compare it... By doing so, I feel the characters lack depth and the impact of the events is blurred.
- It's quite obvious that seeds for future installments are being sown in this work, making it feel like the creators are not fully committed to "putting their heart into one shot," as if a story that could be finished in an hour is unnecessarily stretched over several.
- Even though I forced the eccentric detective Ruisawa into the summary, I think she wasn't necessary for the story...
- Hmm, I might not have enjoyed it much. This feeling is similar to when I read "Beyond Volume 2" of the "Scream Legend."
Words I Didn't Understand
- 閨 (neya): This character, used in the name Keibatsu Tsuyako, means a woman's bedroom.
- Flaneur: A French term meaning someone who strolls around aimlessly.
- Death March: Refers to prisoners being forced to move long distances under harsh conditions... Why such a name, little brother?
